What majors are available through FOCUS?
The associate of arts degree, is designed for adults who have zero or minimal college credits. For people who have already earned approximately two years of college credit, FOCUS also offers bachelor of science degrees in Business Administration, Business Management, Christian Counseling, Communication Studies, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Ministries, and Psychology with an emphasis in either Marriage and Family, Criminal Justice, or Health Psychology.
How much does FOCUS cost?
At $335 per credit, the FOCUS program is an affordable way to complete your degree. Call us at 651-631-5200 and we'll give you the details. Books and materials vary in cost. Financial Aid is available to those who qualify.
Will my employer pay for my education?
Many major Minnesota corporations recognize the FOCUS program as being eligible for tuition reimbursement. Those companies send a strong message to their employees that they support their efforts to complete their degree and see education as important for professional and personal development. In some companies, tuition reimbursement is based on length of employment or grades. If you're unsure whether your company offers tuition reimbursement, contact your Human Resources Department.
Is financial aid available for me?
FOCUS has an in-house Financial Aid Counselor who will help you determine what financial aid might be available for you. FOCUS will also provide you with a brochure that explains how to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. For more information regarding financial aid please call 651-631-5105.
How much time should I expect to spend studying outside of class?
Study time varies from class to class and student to student. Normally you can expect to spend approximately 10 to 12 hours a week outside of class, reading, working on class projects, or writing papers.
If I work full time and have a family, will I have time to complete FOCUS?
While FOCUS students come from a variety of backgrounds, the majority of FOCUS students have families and are employed full time. Many adults who are not able to complete their degree through a traditional college day-school program have found the flexibility of attending classes once a week is much more compatible with their busy schedules.
How will my college credits transfer into the FOCUS program?
FOCUS offers a free transcript analysis for just that purpose. Our Admissions office will evaluate your college transcripts so you know what credits will transfer into the program. This analysis can be done from your official college transcripts or copies of transcripts that you may already have on hand. There is no cost or obligation for this service.
How is it possible to complete my degree by going to class only once a week?
A minimum of 60 semester transfer credits is needed for entrance into the degree completion program. Those 60 credits are the equivalent of approximately two years of college. Students complete 45-55 semester credits in a degree completion program, and additional credits may be earned through writing Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) papers and/or additional elective credits. A total of 125 semester credits is required to graduate from the degree completion program. For the associate of arts program, students enter with minimal or no college credit and complete 60 semester credits to earn their associate of arts degree. Your counselor can advise you on how to begin, regardless of the number of transferable credits you bring to FOCUS. Students attend class once a week and do much of their studying and preparation outside of the classroom. In addition, each class night covers a larger amount of material than one might generally receive during a standard college class. (Due to the accelerated nature of the program, consistent attendance is essential.)
Can I earn college credit for my experiences?
Yes, if you are enrolled in the bachelor of science program, you may request to receive credit for experience by submitting a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) portfolio. Credit may also be awarded for military training or for professional training or examinations if the American Council on Education (ACE) has recommended credit. You may also be eligible to obtain credits by taking DANTES or CLEP exams.
Will my FOCUS degree be accepted by other colleges and universities?
FOCUS/Northwestern College is fully accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Therefore, the credits earned by FOCUS and NWC students are recognized by other colleges and universities. Prerequisites for graduate programs vary. We recommend you contact the Center for Graduate Studies at NWC to determine the exact requirements for entrance.
Where is the NWC campus located?
