Frequently Asked Questions

Is financial aid available?
FOCUS Degree Completion financial aid counselors can help you determine what financial aid may be available for you. FOCUS will also provide you with a brochure that explains how to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. For more information regarding financial aid please contact Financial Aid at 651-631-5105 or by e-mail.

How much time should I expect to spend studying outside of class?
Study time for students in a FOCUS Degree Completion Program varies from class to class and student to student. Normally you can expect to spend approximately 10 to 15 hours a week outside of class reading, working on class projects or writing papers.

Study time for students in a distance education program varies from class to class and student to student. Normally you can expect to spend approximately 5 to 10 hours a lesson.

I work full time and have family commitments. Will I have time to complete my FOCUS program?
Most FOCUS Degree Completion students have family commitments and are employed full time. Many adults who are not able to complete their degree through a traditional day-school program have found the flexibility of attending classes once a week or via distance education is much more compatible with their busy schedules.

How will my college credits transfer into the FOCUS program?
Our admissions office offers a free service to evaluate your college transcripts so you know which credits will transfer into the program. This analysis can be done from your official college transcripts or from copies of transcripts that you may already have on hand. There is no cost or obligation for this service.

Will my degree be accepted by other colleges and universities?
Your FOCUS degree through Northwestern College is fully accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (312-263-0456, www.ncahigherlearningcommission.org,) so the credits earned at Northwestern are recognized by other colleges and universities. Prerequisites for graduate programs vary. We recommend you contact the Center for Graduate Studies at NWC to determine the exact requirements for entrance.

Where is Northwestern College?
Northwestern College is located in Roseville, Minn., just a few minutes from both downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis. Some classes are offered at other Twin Cities locations.
