Orchestra Children's Concert
Join us for an evening of excitement as the Northwestern College Orchestra, conducted by David Kozamchak, teams up the Academy of Music to present a concert for the children.
The Concert Includes:

Der Schneeman (The Snowman) Overture by Erich Korngold
Paul Bunyan Suite by William Bergsma
Les Toreadors from Carmen Suite no. 1 by Georges Bizet
Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev
Featuring Doreen Hutchings as the Narrator; Andrea Needham, flute; Colton Cox, oboe; Kimberly Carlson, clarinet; Tracy Foslien, bassoon, and the Northwestern College Orchestra.
The classic tale of Peter and the Wolf comes to life as the Northwestern College Orchestra presents a Children’s Concert with special narration by faculty member Doreen Hutchings. Children and adults of all ages are invited to come! The Academy of Music will be sponsoring an Instrumental “Petting Zoo” at 6:30 p.m., one hour prior to the concert, in the Maranatha Hall Lobby. Children will have the opportunity to touch and play real instruments of the orchestra. An Arts and Crafts area will also be set up where children can let their imaginations soar as they creatively prepare for the concert. Refreshments will be provided. The concert will be one hour in length.

College Choir Concert
We are very pleased to announce that the Northwestern College Choir, directed by Timothy Sawyer, has been selected to perform at the 2009 Minnesota Collegiate Choral Festival in November. The choir will sing individually and also in amassed choir under the direction of Craig Jessop, head of the music department at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, and former director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The combined choirs will premiere a commissioned choral work, composed specifically for this festival by Minnesota native Eric William Barnum entitled “look up…”. The new composition will be featured as the grand finale of the Festival Concert.
The 2009 Minnesota Collegiate Choral Festival is sponsored by the F. Melius Christiansen (FMC) Endowment Fund Committee and the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota. All proceeds for the concert will be donated to the organization’s FMC Endowment Fund which annually awards scholarships to Minnesota choral directors for professional development opportunities.
Other choirs participating in the festival include Minnesota State University–Mankato Concert Choir, St. John’s University Men’s Chorus, University Singers from University of Minnesota Duluth and University of St. Thomas Chamber Singers.
The Collegiate Festival Concert will be presented at Benson Great Hall on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. on the Bethel University campus located at 3900 Bethel Drive in St. Paul, Minn. All seats are reserved and are on sale from the Benson Great Hall Box Office (651-638-6333 or www.edu/benson-great-hall) for $25 each. Concert patrons who wish to purchase a special $75 ticket will also receive a CD recording of the entire Festival Concert. The additional $50 fee will be donated to the FMC Endowment Fund.

For an evening that is sure to lift your spirits, come to Maranatha Hall on Saturday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m., where the NWC Jazz Band will perform a FREE concert of jazz standards and new works, under the energizing leadership of Monte Mumford. This outstanding ensemble of college jazz musicians, who have a passion for this American art form, will knock your socks off!

COLLEGE CHOIR
The 79-voice Northwestern College Choir, conducted by Timothy Sawyer, presents a concert with a Baltic flavor with music from Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, as well as folk music, beloved American hymns and spirituals.
WOMEN’S CHORALE
The Women’s Chorale will perform three sections of Mass No. 6 by contemporary Hungarian composer György Orbán, a dynamic work featuring student pianist and choir member Susanna Lim. The chorale will be joined by faculty artist Dr. Richard Lange on Rêverie by Claude Debussy, a dreamy, Impressionistic piano solo with a choral accompaniment arranged by Jackson Berkey. The French mood will continue with an arrangement of Les Berceaux by Gabriel Fauré directed by Angela Van Loon, student assistant and conductor. The sound of crickets, frogs, and rain enhance Peace on Earth . . . and lots of little crickets by Paul Carey, and the women conclude with This Is the Day by Gerald T. Smith, a gospel selection featuring Anastasia Skillingstad as soprano soloist.
VARSITY MEN'S CHORUS
The Varsity Men's Chorus – 40 strong, presents a concert of rousing fraternal fun, folk music and spirituals, with a little surprise thrown in for good measure!
Symphonic Band Concert
Masterpieces for Winds: the Music of “Song and Dance”
The Northwestern College Symphonic Band will present a free concert on Saturday, November 21, at 7:30 p.m. This promises to be an outstanding evening of symphonic wind masterpieces of song and dance, featuring the works of Vincent Persichetti, Robert Russell Bennett, Malcolm Arnold, George Gershwin and Percy Grainger. Conducted by Monte Mumford, this concert is sure to inspire and delight the listener!
