Biology Major - Bachelor of Science
A biology major has two options: the Pre-Professional Program, for research and professional school preparation (e.g., medical, dental, veterinary, etc.), and the General Biology Program, which leads to career opportunities in allied health fields, education, education, environmental studies, or sales work in biotechnical industries. The degree is granted upon completion of completion of 125 credits as specified on page 42 of the catalog (40 credits must be in 3000- or 4000-level courses).

Admissions to the Pre-Professional Program
Biology majors initially enroll on the General Biology Program. Students who wish to pursue the Pre-Professional Program must make a formal application at any time after completing the three prerequisites listed below. Changing to the Pre-Professional Program may require more time to complete if the student has too many credits in other programs that are not applicable.

Note: Biology majors interested in pre-medicine will fillow the pre-professional program

To be considered for admission to the Pre-Professional Program, a student must:
  • Achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 based on the completion of at least 30 Northwestern College credits.
  • Complete BIO1011, BIO1012, and CHE1021, or equivalent courses.
  • Complete an application to include information such as reasons for entering the field of medicine and a description of any prior experience or exposure to the practice of medicine. Applications may be obtained from the student's academic advisor.

Biology majors and minors must receive a "C-" or better in all prerequisite courses. In addition, biology majors and minors must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in all courses with BIO, CHE, and SCI prefixes in order to graduate.
