Design students discuss the intersection of faith and design at Northwestern College

The Department of Art & Design aims to teach the production of the visual arts within a Christian context, toward the goal of preparing students for professional careers in this field. Strong emphasis is placed upon critical thinking, research, and study in the visual arts, both on and off campus.

Objectives

  • To demonstrate knowledge of creative problem-solving, current technology, concepts and terminology, art historical trends, and philosophical foundations of visual art.
  • To demonstrate skill development in the creation of visual art, the conceptualization of ideas, visual and oral communication, and critical and historical writing through the use of current technology.
  • To develop an appreciation of artistic expression, formulate ethical and spiritual values, and exhibit a commitment to the field of art and design.

Studio art major commissions work for St. Paul Chamber Orchestra

NXC Imaging recently commissioned Northwestern senior Jane Gulbranson’s painting for the opening night of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. A studio art major with a concentration in painting, Gulbranson spent one month finishing the 36” by 28” oil painting.

With some former ties to NXC Imaging, a provider of medical diagnostic imaging systems that service the Upper Midwest, Gulbranson saw this opportunity as a huge honor. This was the company’s fourth time sponsoring the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Gulbranson’s painting was featured on the insert in the audience’s program, and she was able to stand by her original painting, on display during one of the performances.
